Hello everyone! Today we bring you the story of Basil the Red-eyed tree frog. This handsome man came in to see us a few weeks ago after his owner had noticed that one of his eyes had changed. More information in the pictures below!

Here is Basil during his exam. We always wear gloves when handling amphibians due to the permeable nature of their skin. You can clearly see here that Basil’s left eye is very different to his right. The pupil (slit in the eye) is extremely dilated and the eye was slightly cloudy. This occurs with a condition called ‘uveitis’ – where there is inflammation within the eye. This can happen for a number of different reasons, and often is due to infection.

Here you can see the eye a little more closely, it isn’t the beautiful red that these guys are named for! We sent Basil home on anti-inflammatory and pain relief medication in addition to some antibiotics.

Here is Basil one week after starting medication – looking and feeling much better!! The eye still has a small opacity to the surface but is looking much happier! After a little more medication Basil’s eye returned to normal. His owner reports he is doing very well at home.
