Unfortunately when our pet birds are unwell they often require medicines to make them feel better. To ensure that antibiotics are other medications are properly absorbed we usually administer these medications directly into the mouth. Unfortunately some birds and their owners find it quite stressful administering medications. Did you know that you can train your parrot to accept medications voluntarily? This reduces the stress to your bird as well as the person trying to administer the medicine. Although it often takes time and training to effectively establish this behaviour, it is invaluable if your animal requires medicating, especially if long-term medications are required. Rica here was on a long-term oral medication which was made much easier to administer, as she was so cooperative. She would even hold her own syringe to lick every last drop of tasty medicine.
